About Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara

Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara is a beat ’em up with a role-playing game inside. Your hero gains levels, finds new weapons and armour, casts spells and uses items, and the story splits at several points so your route can be different every time. Six heroes, dozens of monsters and huge bosses stand between you and the sorceress Synn, who is really an ancient red dragon. It is Capcom’s 1996 arcade game, and it plays right here in your browser with no download.

How to play

  1. Press Play under the title picture and wait a moment while the arcade machine starts.
  2. Press Coin (V on a keyboard) to add a credit, then Start (Enter), and pick one of the six heroes.
  3. Attack with Z and jump with X. Hold down and attack, or jump and attack, for other moves.
  4. Choose an item or spell with C and use it with A. The cleric, the elf and the magic-user cast spells; daggers, oil flasks and arrows are for everyone.
  5. When the screen asks you to choose a way, move the arrow to the path you want.

Controls

Computer: arrow keys move, Z attacks, X jumps, C chooses an item and A uses it, V adds a coin and Enter is Start. Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons.

Phone and tablet: the arcade pad appears under the game: the stick, Atk, Jump, Sel, Use, Coin and Start.

A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Cheats

Press the magic wand button next to the full screen button above the game. A small panel opens over the game, and the game waits until you close it. The cheats switch on a few seconds after the machine has started.

  • Unlimited energy: your hit points stay full.
  • Invincible: monsters can’t hurt you.
  • Infinite time: the clock never runs out.

Reloading the page turns the cheats off again.

About Shadow over Mystara

Capcom released Shadow over Mystara in 1996 on its CP System II board, as the sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom from 1993. Both games are set in Mystara, a world of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game, and both were made with the game’s publisher at the time, TSR. Up to four people can play together in the arcade. The two games were later released together for home consoles as Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara.
