## Key takeaways

- Colors go together when they share something (hue family, softness or warmth) and still differ enough in lightness to tell apart.
- The wheel is not enough: only 31% of opposite pairs in our 30-color palette reached a 3:1 contrast, about the same as all pairs (32%).
- Two light pastels never did: 0 of 21 pastel pairs reached 3:1. Let a dark outline or one darker color separate them.
- Use about 60% of a main color, 30% of a second color and 10% of an accent.

**Colors go together when they have something in common, such as a hue family, a similar softness or a shared warmth, and still differ enough in lightness to be told apart.** The color wheel gives you the first part: neighbors, opposites and evenly spaced triads. It says nothing about the second. When we measured all 435 pairs in the 30-color palette of our [Coloring Book](https://yesthisgame.com/coloring-book/), opposite colors stood apart no more often than any random pair, and two light pastels never did. This guide covers both halves, with palettes you can copy for coloring, nails and cakes.

## Hue, lightness and saturation

Every color can be described by three properties, and knowing them makes the rest of this guide easy:

- **Hue** is the color family: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. It is what the color wheel arranges in a circle.
- **Lightness** (designers also say value) is how close the color is to white or to black. Sky blue and navy share a hue but differ in lightness.
- **Saturation** is how strong the color is. Pastels and dusty colors are low in saturation, neon colors are high.

Palettes feel calm when their colors share two of these and change only the third. They feel lively when they change hue and keep the other two in the same range. They feel messy when everything changes at once.

## Four color schemes that always work

These come from the color wheel, the circle of hues used in art classes and paint shops. The hex codes are from our games, so you can type them straight into any drawing app.

*Four classic color schemes*

| Scheme | How to build it | Example | Feels |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Monochromatic | One hue in light, medium and dark versions | Sky #8ecae6, blue #3a86ff, navy #1d3557 | Calm, elegant |
| Analogous | Two to four neighbors on the wheel | Coral #ff6f59, orange #ff8c42, yellow #ffd23f | Warm or cool, harmonious |
| Complementary | Two hues opposite each other | Purple #9b5de5 and yellow #ffd23f | Bold, energetic |
| Triadic | Three hues a third of the wheel apart | Red #e63946, yellow #ffd23f, blue #3a86ff (the painter's primaries) | Playful, balanced |

Two strong opposites side by side can look loud. Designers often soften one of them, by using a lighter or a darker version, so that one color leads and the other supports it.

## What we measured: which pairs stand apart

A palette can follow the wheel perfectly and still look muddy, because the colors are too close in lightness. To put a number on it we used the contrast ratio from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). It compares how much light two colors reflect and runs from 1:1 (no difference) to 21:1 (black on white). The [W3C uses 3:1](https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG21/Understanding/non-text-contrast.html) as the minimum for shapes and graphics that people need to tell apart, so we used the same line. We checked every one of the 435 pairs in the 30 colors of Coloring Book and grouped them by their place on the wheel.

![Bar chart: share of color pairs with a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 in the 30-color Coloring Book palette. Two light pastels 0%, analogous 28%, complementary 31%, triadic 31%, all 435 pairs 32%](https://yesthisgame.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/color-pairs-contrast-chart.png)
*Share of color pairs with a contrast ratio of at least 3:1, by their relation on the color wheel.*

Opposite colors reached 3:1 in 31% of cases and neighbors in 28%, almost the same as all pairs together (32%). The wheel tells you which hues belong together, but not whether you will be able to see the border between them. Some well-known pairs show it clearly:

*Contrast ratio of some popular pairs*

| Pair | Relation | Contrast |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Teal #2a9d8f and coral #ff6f59 | Complementary | 1.2 : 1 |
| Blue #3a86ff and orange #ff8c42 | Complementary | 1.5 : 1 |
| Lavender #cdb4db and sky #8ecae6 | Two pastels | 1.05 : 1 |
| Purple #9b5de5 and yellow #ffd23f | Complementary on the painter's wheel | 2.9 : 1 |
| Sky #8ecae6 and navy #1d3557 | Analogous | 6.9 : 1 |
| Navy #1d3557 and yellow #ffd23f | Complementary | 8.6 : 1 |

Blue and orange are the textbook opposites, yet at this lightness they barely separate. Sky blue and navy are close neighbors on the wheel and separate very well, because one is light and one is dark. And among the seven lightest colors of the palette, none of the 21 pairs reached 3:1; only one in twenty reached even 1.5:1.

We grouped pairs by their hue angle on the color wheel screens use. The painter's wheel taught in art class places a few colors a little differently: there, purple sits opposite yellow.

Contrast is not everything. Two colors with low contrast can still look lovely together, which is exactly how soft pastel palettes work. It only matters where you want an edge to show.

## The 60-30-10 rule

Once you have a palette, the 60-30-10 rule from interior design tells you how much of each color to use. One main color covers about 60% of the space, a second color about 30%, and an accent the last 10%. Decorating guides such as [Better Homes and Gardens](https://www.bhg.com.au/60-30-10-rule) apply it to walls, furniture and cushions, but it works on anything:

- **A coloring page:** the background and the biggest shape take the main color, the middle-sized shapes the second color, and the small details the accent.
- **Nails:** four nails in the main color, a soft second color as a French tip or pattern, and one accent nail in gold or glitter.
- **A cake:** the frosting is the main color, the drip or the second tier the supporting color, and the toppings the accent.

## Quick tips for each medium

### Coloring

Give neighboring areas different lightness, not just different hues. A light area next to a dark one reads at a glance, even in a busy picture. If you love pastels, let the dark outlines do the separating and avoid putting two pale colors in large areas side by side.

### Nails

A monochrome French (nude with white) or a light base with darker dots always works, because the contrast is built in. For two colors on alternating nails, pick one light and one dark, such as navy and white.

### Cakes

A drip shows best when it is clearly darker or lighter than the frosting: dark chocolate on white or pink, white chocolate on red or chocolate. Toppings are your 10%, so a few strong colors are enough.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which colors go well together?

Colors that share a hue family (analogous), opposites on the color wheel (complementary), three evenly spaced hues (triadic), or light and dark versions of one hue (monochromatic). Whatever you choose, give neighboring colors different lightness so they stand apart.

### What are complementary colors?

Colors opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange or teal and coral. They look bold together, but at a similar lightness they can blend: blue #3a86ff and orange #ff8c42 have a contrast ratio of only 1.5:1.

### What is the 60-30-10 rule?

A way to share out a palette: about 60% for the main color, 30% for a second color and 10% for an accent. It comes from interior design and works for pictures, nails and cakes too.

### Why do my pastel colors look washed out together?

Pastels are all light, so they barely differ in lightness. In our test none of the 21 pairs of the seven lightest colors reached a 3:1 contrast. Add one darker color or keep dark outlines between them.

### How do I check if two colors have enough contrast?

Compare their contrast ratio, the measure used in the WCAG accessibility guidelines. For shapes that people need to tell apart, the W3C asks for at least 3:1.

### Where can I try color combinations for free?

Coloring Book, Nail Art Studio and Sweet Cake Shop on Yes This Game let you try palettes on pictures, nails and cakes in your browser, with nothing to download.
