About Street Hoop

Street Hoop is Data East’s 1994 Neo Geo arcade game of three-on-three street basketball. Pick a national team, take the ball to an outdoor court and beat the other countries one by one with big dunks, three-pointers and quick steals. This page runs the original Neo Geo arcade machine in your browser through an arcade emulator, with unlimited coins and no download. The same game is known as Dunk Dream in Japan and Street Slam in North America.

How to play

  1. Press Play and wait while the Neo Geo machine starts up (about 14 MB on the first visit). You will see the Neo Geo and Data East logos first.
  2. When the title screen appears, press V to insert a coin, then Start (Enter).
  3. The game shows a short how-to-play lesson, then the team select screen. Choose a country with the arrow keys and press button A.
  4. Score more points than the other team before time runs out. Win to face the next country.
  5. Lost? Insert another coin with V and press Start to keep going.

Choosing a team

Ten countries are on the map, from France and Spain to the USA, Japan and Korea. Each team is rated for dunk, 3 point, speed and defence, so pick a team of dunkers if you like driving to the basket, or shooters if you prefer to stay outside the arc.

Arcade controls

Action Keyboard Phone
Move your player Arrow keys Cross on the left
Shoot (attack) / jump to block (defence) Z A
Pass (attack) / steal (defence) X B

Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons. A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Tips

  • Pass before you shoot. An open teammate near the basket scores far more often than a crowded shot.
  • Drive straight at the basket with a dunk team: dunks are hard to block.
  • On defence, stay between your man and the basket and time your steals instead of pressing all the time.
  • Three-pointers are worth the risk when you are behind with little time left.
  • Use save state before a hard match and load it if things go wrong.

About Street Hoop

Data East released the game for SNK’s Neo Geo arcade system in 1994. It was built around fast three-on-three games on outdoor courts, a style made popular by street basketball tournaments of the early nineties, with simple two-button controls and exaggerated dunks. The Neo Geo cartridge let arcades and home players run exactly the same game.
