Super C (Super Contra)

Super C is the sequel to Contra, and on many players’ lists it is the better game. Bill Rizer and Lance Bean return to stop the alien force that has taken over an army base, and fight their way through eight areas: side-scrolling jungles and bases, top-down stages seen from above, and a final trip into the aliens’ lair. It is the 1990 Konami NES game, known as Super Contra in the arcade and in Japan, and it plays right here in your browser with no download.

How to play

1. Press Play under the title picture, then Start (Enter) on the title screen.
2. Run with the arrow keys, fire with Z and jump with X. Hold a direction while firing to aim in eight directions.
3. Shoot the flying capsules and the sensors to drop weapons: M machine gun, S spread gun, L laser, F fire gun, and R to make your gun fire faster.
4. One hit costs a life, and your weapon goes with it. Keep moving and shoot first.
5. In the top-down areas you move in all directions and the screen scrolls up.

Controls

Computer: arrow keys move, Z fires, X jumps, Enter is Start and pauses. Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons.

Phone and tablet: the NES pad appears under the game: the cross, B (fires), A (jumps) and Start.

A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Cheats

Press the magic wand button next to the full screen button above the game. A small panel opens over the game, and the game waits until you close it.

• Unlimited lives: you never run out of lives.
• Super weapon: always the spread gun (S), with rapid fire.

Reloading the page turns the cheats off again.

About Super C

Konami released Super Contra in arcades in 1988, then made a new version for the NES that came out in North America in 1990 as Super C. It kept the two-player run and gun of Contra and added the top-down areas, a bigger choice of weapons and tougher bosses. In Europe the same game was released as Probotector II, with robots in place of the soldiers.
