Cap Flip

Cap Flip is a free 3D milk caps game you play in your browser. Two players put their caps on one stack, picture down, and take turns throwing a heavy slammer at it. Every cap that lands picture up belongs to the player who threw. Beat five rivals, win their caps and fill an album of 34 different designs. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

1. Press Play and choose a rival. You each put three caps on the stack, picture down, and the stack is mixed.
2. Aim: move the yellow ring over the top cap. A throw a little off the middle works best.
3. Power: hold the button. A needle runs up and down the meter beside the stack; let go while it is in the green.
4. The slammer hits, the caps fly. Caps that land picture up go to your row, the rest are stacked again and your rival throws.
5. When the stack is empty, the player with more caps wins the match.

Controls

• Mouse: point to aim, hold the button to charge, let go to throw.
• Keyboard: arrow keys move the aim, hold Space (or Enter) to charge, let go to throw.
• Phone and tablet: touch the stack where you want to hit, hold, and lift your finger in the green.

Where to hit

Where the slammer lands decides how the caps spin. A hit in the dead centre presses the stack flat and gives almost no spin, so the caps come down the way they were. A hit about halfway to the edge gives each cap close to a clean half-turn, which is exactly what you want. Hit too close to the edge and the caps turn too far, or the slammer glances off and hardly moves them. Power decides how deep the hit reaches: a weak throw only lifts the top caps, a throw in the green sends the whole stack flying.

Rivals and sets

Each rival plays a little better than the one before and brings a set of their own. The caps you flip from a rival’s set go into your album for good, and the caps you bring never leave it, so a lost match never costs you a cap.

• Rico plays with the Space set: ringed planet, rocket, moon, UFO, comet and astronaut.
• Mira brings the Sea set: fish, octopus, crab, whale, starfish and jellyfish.
• Leo brings the Jungle set: lion, panda, frog, fox, owl and monkey.
• Coco brings the Sweets set: donut, ice cream, cupcake, lollipop, watermelon and cherries.
• Max, the champion, plays with four shiny Champion caps: crown, trophy, diamond and gold star.

You start with the six Classic caps: star, lightning, heart, smiley, bullseye and spiral.

Slammers

• Plastic: the one you start with.
• Steel: heavier, so the hit reaches deeper into the stack. Unlocks when you beat two rivals.
• Gold: the heaviest. Unlocks when you beat Max.

Tips

• Aim about halfway between the middle and the edge of the top cap, not in the centre.
• The needle moves slowly near the top and bottom and fast in the middle. Start holding, watch one full sweep, then let go as it climbs into the green.
• The meter gets a little quicker as a match goes on and against stronger rivals.
• A draw does not unlock the next rival, so take the rematch.

What is a milk caps game?

Milk caps were the round cardboard lids of milk bottles. People started collecting them and playing a stacking game with them, later sold with printed pictures and known by many as pogs. Cap Flip plays the classic rules: everyone adds caps to one stack and keeps the ones they flip.
