Final Fight

Final Fight is the arcade beat ’em up that set the standard for the genre. The Mad Gear gang has kidnapped Jessica, the daughter of Metro City’s new mayor, Mike Haggar. Haggar, a former wrestler, sets out with her boyfriend Cody and his ninja friend Guy to get her back, punching their way through six areas of the city. This is the 1989 Capcom arcade version, and it plays right here in your browser with no download.

How to play

1. Press Play under the title picture and wait a moment while the arcade machine starts.
2. Press Coin (V on a keyboard) to add a credit, then Start (Enter).
3. Pick Guy, Cody or Haggar with left and right and press attack to confirm.
4. Walk with the arrow keys, attack with Z and jump with X. Keep pressing Z for a combo, and walk into an enemy to grab and throw him.
5. Press Z and X together for a spinning special attack that clears everyone around you. It costs a little energy.
6. Break barrels and boxes for food that refills your energy, and for knives, pipes and swords.

Controls

Computer: arrow keys walk, Z attacks, X jumps, Z + X is the special attack, V adds a coin and Enter is Start. Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons.

Phone and tablet: the pad under the game has the cross, A to attack, B to jump, and Coin and Start buttons.

A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Cheats

Press the magic wand button next to the full screen button above the game. A small panel opens over the game, and the game waits until you close it. The cheats switch on a few seconds after the machine has started.

• Unlimited lives: you never run out of lives.
• Unlimited energy: your energy bar stays full.
• Invincible: enemies can’t hurt you.

Reloading the page turns the cheats off again.

The three heroes

• Mike Haggar: the mayor, slow but very strong, with the piledriver and the backdrop throws.
• Cody: Jessica’s boyfriend, a balanced street fighter who is very good with a knife.
• Guy: a ninja, the fastest of the three, with quick combos and a wall-bounce jump.

About Final Fight

Capcom released Final Fight in arcades in 1989. It began as a sequel to Street Fighter, and its big characters, its food in the barrels and its villains like Belger and Rolento made it one of the most influential beat ’em ups. Guy and Cody later joined the Street Fighter series.
