The Simpsons Arcade

The Simpsons arcade game turns Springfield into a beat ’em up. Smithers has run off with a giant diamond, the diamond ends up in Maggie’s mouth, and Smithers takes the baby too. Homer, Marge, Bart and Lisa set off after him through eight stages, from downtown Springfield and Krustyland to Mr. Burns’ nuclear power plant. This is Konami’s 1991 arcade game in its two-player version, and it plays right here in your browser with no download.

How to play

1. Press Play under the title picture and wait a moment while the arcade machine starts.
2. Press Coin (V on a keyboard) to add a credit, then Start (Enter).
3. Pick Marge, Homer, Bart or Lisa with left and right and press attack.
4. Walk with the arrow keys, attack with Z and jump with X. Attack in the air for a jump attack.
5. Pick up food to refill your energy, and grab hammers, bowling balls and mailboxes to hit the enemies with.
6. With two players, stand next to each other for a team attack: Homer and Marge roll through the enemies, Homer carries a kid on his shoulders, and Bart and Lisa link arms for a clothesline.

Controls

Computer: arrow keys walk, Z attacks, X jumps, V adds a coin and Enter is Start. Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons.

Phone and tablet: the pad under the game has the cross, A to attack, B to jump, and Coin and Start buttons.

A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Cheats

Press the magic wand button next to the full screen button above the game. A small panel opens over the game, and the game waits until you close it. The cheats switch on a few seconds after the machine has started.

• Unlimited lives: you never run out of lives, whichever Simpson you play.
• Unlimited energy: your energy bar stays full.

Reloading the page turns the cheats off again.

• Homer: punches and kicks, slow but strong.
• Marge: swings her vacuum cleaner, with a long reach.
• Bart: hits with his skateboard and moves fast.
• Lisa: whips her jump rope, quick and agile.

About The Simpsons arcade game

Konami released The Simpsons in arcades in 1991, two years after the show began. The original cabinet let four players play at once, one for each family member; the two-player version here lets both players choose any Simpson. The game is remembered for its cutscenes, its Springfield cast as enemies and the final fight against Mr. Burns.
