The Punisher

The Punisher is Capcom’s Marvel beat ’em up. Frank Castle, the Punisher, teams up with Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. to bring down the Kingpin, the crime boss of New York, fighting his gangs, his robots and his hired killers stage by stage. It plays like Final Fight with guns: when gunmen appear, Frank and Nick draw their own. This is the 1993 Capcom arcade game, and it plays right here in your browser with no download.

How to play

1. Press Play under the title picture and wait a moment while the arcade machine starts.
2. Press Coin (V on a keyboard) to add a credit, then Start (Enter).
3. Pick Frank Castle or Nick Fury and press attack.
4. Walk with the arrow keys, attack with Z and jump with X. Walk into an enemy to grab and throw him.
5. Press Z and X together on the ground for a special attack that hits everyone around you. It costs a little energy.
6. To throw a grenade, jump and press Z and X together in the air. The number next to the B icon at the bottom shows how many you have left.
7. Pick up the weapons the enemies drop, and the food hidden in crates and barrels.

Controls

Computer: arrow keys walk, Z attacks, X jumps, Z + X is the special attack (in the air: a grenade), V adds a coin and Enter is Start. Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons.

Phone and tablet: the pad under the game has the cross, A to attack, B to jump, and Coin and Start buttons.

A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works.

Cheats

Press the magic wand button next to the full screen button above the game. A small panel opens over the game, and the game waits until you close it. The cheats switch on a few seconds after the machine has started.

• Unlimited lives: you never run out of lives.
• Unlimited energy: your energy bar stays full.
• Unlimited bombs: you always have nine grenades.
• Invincible: enemies can’t hurt you.

Reloading the page turns the cheats off again.

• Frank Castle: the Punisher, a former soldier at war with organized crime. Strong throws and heavy punches.
• Nick Fury: the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with the eye patch, who joins Frank in the hunt for the Kingpin.

Capcom released The Punisher in arcades in 1993. It began Capcom’s long partnership with Marvel, which led to X-Men: Children of the Atom and the Marvel vs. Capcom series.
