Word Unscramble Tips: What 50 Scrambled Words Show

Key takeaways
- A scrambled word never needs more swaps than it has letters minus one: two for a three-letter word, six for a seven-letter word.
- With the 28-second clock we read in every mode, a seven-letter word leaves at least 4.7 seconds per swap even in the worst case.
- In the 50 timed words, E is the most common letter (28 of 250), eight words start with J and every Q is followed by U.
- Fix the letters that are already right first, then move one letter at a time to its place.
To unscramble a word fast in a swap puzzle, fix the letters that already sit right and move every other letter straight to its place: a word never needs more swaps than it has letters minus one. We pulled the numbers out of Wordplank, which gives you wooden letter tiles, a clock and four modes, and checked what its own list of 50 timed words looks like.
How the swap puzzle works
You click one tile, click a second tile and the two trade places. There is no typing and no dragging. The clock showed 28 seconds at the start of the first round in all four modes (timed, image hints, text hints and sentences) and counted down one second at a time.
The most swaps a word can need
Any order of letters can be fixed with at most one swap fewer than the number of letters: every swap puts at least one tile in its final place, and the last swap places two. That caps the work, and the clock turns the cap into a pace.
| Letters | Possible orders | Most swaps needed | Seconds per swap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 6 | 2 | 14.0 |
| 4 | 24 | 3 | 9.3 |
| 5 | 120 | 4 | 7.0 |
| 6 | 720 | 5 | 5.6 |
| 7 | 5,040 | 6 | 4.7 |
The orders count assumes every letter is different (repeated letters leave fewer). The clock is the 28 seconds we read on screen in the first round; later rounds may differ.

Even a seven-letter word leaves at least 4.7 seconds for each swap. The real risk is hesitation: you lose time deciding, not swapping.
What the 50 timed words look like
Timed mode draws from a list of 50 words: ten each of three, four, five, six and seven letters. We counted what is in it.
- E is the most common letter: 28 of the 250 letters, then A (22), U (17), L (15) and Z (15).
- Every Q has a U right after it: all seven Q words, from QUIZ to MOSQUE, have one.
- J starts words: eight of the 50 words start with J, more than any other letter, and 13 contain a Z.
- Repeated letters are common: 19 words use a letter twice or more, such as PIZZA, JAZZ and SQUEEZE.
- Endings help: 11 words end in E, seven in T and six in Y.
- Rare letters are normal: 26 of the 50 words contain at least one of Q, Z, X or J.
5 tips that follow from the numbers
- Fix first, then move. Put back the letters that are already in the right place, then swap each other letter straight to its place.
- Place Q and U together at once. The U always follows the Q in these words.
- Try the ending next. E, T and Y finish most of the words.
- Look at J and Z first. They are rare in everyday spelling but common here, so a J at the front or a double Z is a strong clue.
- Do not hunt for the perfect order. The worst case is a few swaps, so start swapping instead of staring.
