About Street Fighter II

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is the 1991 Capcom arcade game that started the fighting game boom. Choose one of eight World Warriors, travel the globe and beat every challenger in best-of-three rounds, then take on the four bosses waiting at the end. This page runs the original arcade machine in your browser through an arcade emulator: the same moves, sounds and difficulty as the cabinet, with unlimited coins and no download.

How to play

  1. Press Play and wait while the arcade machine starts up (about 12 MB on the first visit). Like the real cabinet, it first shows a short warning screen.
  2. Press V to insert a coin, then Start (Enter).
  3. Pick your fighter with the arrow keys and press Start or any punch button.
  4. Win two rounds to win the fight. Each round lasts 99 seconds; whoever has more health left when the timer runs out wins it.
  5. Lost a fight? Insert another coin with V and press Start before the countdown ends to continue.

The World Warriors

  • Ryu and Ken: all-round fighters with the fireball, the uppercut and the hurricane kick.
  • Chun-Li: the fastest, with the lightning kick and strong jumping attacks.
  • Guile: a defensive fighter with the Sonic Boom and the flash kick.
  • Blanka, E. Honda, Zangief and Dhalsim: electricity, the hundred-hand slap, spinning piledrivers and stretching limbs.

Move the mouse over the game to show the bar with pause, restart, sound, save state, load state and full screen buttons. A USB or Bluetooth gamepad also works and is the most comfortable way to do special moves.

Special moves for Ryu and Ken

  • Hadouken (fireball): down, down-forward, forward, then punch.
  • Shoryuken (dragon uppercut): forward, down, down-forward, then punch.
  • Tatsumaki (hurricane kick): down, down-back, back, then kick.

“Forward” means toward your opponent. Roll the directions smoothly in one motion and press the button at the end.

Tips

  • Block by holding away from your opponent. Crouch-block (down-back) against low kicks.
  • Jump in with a heavy kick, land, and follow up straight away: the classic arcade combo.
  • Throw a fireball from far away and uppercut anyone who jumps over it.
  • The bonus stages (smashing a car, breaking barrels) give big points. Use your strongest attacks.
  • Use save state before a boss and load it if the fight goes wrong.

About the original arcade game

Capcom released Street Fighter II: The World Warrior in arcades in 1991. It introduced the line-up of eight playable characters with their own special moves and combos, and its success made one-on-one fighting games the biggest arcade genre of the decade. The version on this page is the original World Warrior arcade release, before the later Champion Edition and Turbo updates.
